Rib fabric is a knit textile characterized by raised vertical lines, created by alternating knit and purl stitches, giving it stretch, elasticity, and shape retention.
Rib fabrics are double-knit, meaning they are created using two sets of needles working at right angles, which balances internal yarn tension and prevents curling. The numerical designation (e.g., 1×1, 2×2) refers to the sequence of knit and purl stitches, which affects the fabric's elasticity, texture, and appearance.
1×1 Rib
Alternates one knit and one purl stitch; highly elastic and ideal for cuffs, neckbands and t-shirt collars.
2×2 Rib
Two knit stitches alternating with two purl stitches; more structured and stable, often used for waistbands and sweater collars.
Interlock Rib
A double-knit variation with smooth surfaces on both sides, offering stability and less stretch, suitable for structured garments.
Wide Rib (3×3, 4×2)
Creates pronounced vertical ribs for outerwear, heavier garments or decorative uses.
Chunky / Flat Back Rib
Heavier variations used for sweaters and textured garments.
